This week, I have the honor of sharing of a place near and dear to my heart: Mountain Mission School. Today they are celebrating 100 YEARS of God’s goodness.
Nestled in the hills of Grundy, Virginia, its mission is: Rescuing Kids, Raising Leaders and Reaching the Nations with the Lord at the center of all.
I had the honor of serving as a middle school teacher and high school girls residential supervisor for three years (2016-2019) and in my time there, I gained priceless experience, relationships and memories I will hold dear for the rest of my life.
Mountain Mission School also played a huge part in my heart behind this blog, “Mess 2 Masterpiece”.
Moving to MMS one week after graduating college, I had to quickly learn the ropes of parenting and teaching, as well as how to live in such a diverse and unique community.
Life was quite messy, especially in the beginning days, weeks, even through the first year. Although, as God (and His people) continued to be so gracious and patient in my growing process, the Lord did far more in my heart and life than I could truly ever put to words.
While the long days were exhausting and we had many moments filled with tears, I would not trade my time at MMS for the world.
He also used the “messes” of the students, coming from impoverished families of various ethnicities and traumatic backgrounds in need of a roof over a head, a solid education and to be loved.
Nonetheless, we saw the true masterpiece of FAMILY running far deeper than race, age or biological blood.
And though I don’t work there now, I will always consider Mountain Mission School my HOME.
Therefore, as we celebrate this milestone today, I pray you will you join us in thanking God for His faithfulness and provision all these years, as well as pray for all the current staff and students who live there and for those to come in days ahead.
I will also be sure to link a few videos below about the school to this post and my FB page.
Feel free to reach out if you have questions or are interested in donating to this wonderful cause or applying for employment!
Much love and prayers always, Alisha
Thanks for sharing about the school you worked at. I had never heard of it before I met you.
